t809 dust update -- bad news?

Please visit our new website at Samsung t809 FAQ

I received my phone back this morning -- my tech friend didn't want to take it apart. He said it is definitely more complicated, and while it can be done, it will likely be damaged by MOST users. As such, he's recommending sending any phone with dust problems back for repair or replacement. Since I didn't want a $300 brick, I'm going to wait until used phones are available cheaply before I go and ruin my toy, sorry folks. If anyone wants to throw $150 in for more research, I'll move further on it.

Back to the drawing board -- I'm going to try a few different tactics to try to clean out the screen. I found some interesting "hairs" that can be used to slide into crevices to remove gunk, I'm going to see if I can use them to find the real "hole" into the inside. I'm still believing it is under the swivel camera, as my rubber "plug" has given me no more dust.

  • Oh well. Maybe I will give it a try. But there's definitely a seal issue on the back side towards the top right corner. When I used compressed air it made the screen worst. I'll let you know my outcome.

  • I'm still going to go through with it in a week or two -- I have 3 backup phones and the new T-Mobile PDA phone should be out in February. I'm just worried about giving advice that could screw things up, so I have to take extra care.

  • Can you show a picture of your "rubber plug" ?

  • I got to the point where I don't want to try to break things just to get the face off. I'll try it again when I have more spare time.
I'll keep on looking for your updates as well.

  • yea...second the request for the 'rubber plug' and a picture of where you think the hole is. I dont have mine yet, but when I get it, the first thing to do is to plug the hole(s).

  • I just wanted to commend you on your excellent blog. It has all the information that I'm looking for as a cell phone shopper. In particular, I'm glad you included all the PPP connection information.

However, do you think you could include some pictures of the dust problem? Is this dust problem a minor nuissance or does it affect the usability of the phone?

  • Depends on the phone. I'll take some pictures tomorrow! Thanks for the compliments and question.

  • Hey guys. This blog is awesome. I ust ordered my phone less than 2 days ago and am getting it on monday, the 16th. I was wondering how quick the web and stuff is on this phone compared to the old technology? Is it quick enough to do your everyday browsing while traveling into work? I think I am going to go with the PDA, T809 combo eventually, but for now I am going to stick with the 809. Thanks guys, awesome site!

  • I have a 10mbps broadband connection at home (beta test) and I use my EDGE tether to my cell. I get 150kbps downloads almost everywhere I go, and its nearly instant-on! The wireless web is awesome.

The downside is that we still can't run anything decent web-wise on the phone. If you're planning on browsing a lot, pick up a bluetooth PDA or laptop.

Thanks for the compliments, I'm working on more content soon!

  • awesome blog you got here...thanks for going through all this trouble for the dust problem...can you post a picture of the plug you use to block the hole?

  • I have been looking into purchasing the t809 but the dust issue is a big concern for me. I happened upon this website:

and I was curious if anyone was familiar with this product and if so would this be good for dust prevention or would some fabricated silicon sleeve be the best idea?

BTW I love this site it is very informative

  • That shield is only for the LCD protection. Dust are coming in to the phone from different path, which people say it might be the hole under the rotating camera.

However, I've been using this phone for 3 days(yeah, only 3 days) and did not have any problem with any dust thing. I also was concerned about the dust issue and I was aware of it at the time of purchase.

However, I just got the phone and I'm very satisfied with this phone.

Just the phone I was looking for.

  • I love the look of this phone but I have to say that their user manuel sucks on so many different levels, I'm almost about to cry.

-WHY isn't there a USB driver for MAC os X? What is this, are we still in 1995? Does Samsung really claim themselves to be at the forefront of product design AND not have compatibility with MACS?
just want to transfer a ringtone and wallpaper I made, i do not ask for much...

-Spent 20 minutes on the phone w/ t-mobile, as usual, they don't know what the hell they're doing AND online support is down, go figure. go t-mobile.

-maybe im a total moron but what am I supposed to do with the sandisk 32mb? User manual is useless, refers a tflash drive outlet (???) but obviously not big enough for the san disk thing that I got. I don't see any conceivable slot or crevice to stick it in. Looked in the user manual's index under "T", There is a big FAT LACUNA where one might expect the mention of "T-FLASH"
on further inspection, i found the tiny litte card inside of the aptly name adapter that one coaxes out with fingernail...I see we have a little russian doll thing going on here. EXCEPT THERE IS NO EXPLANATION IN THE BLOODY MANUAL WITH THE PROPER SUBJECT HEADING OF T-FLASH.

Maybe I live under a rock and this was all very obvious to all of you.

but screw you samsung, i just wasted 45 minutes of my time.

  • Thirding the request to see pictures of the rubber plug + tape, to see how you did it. Any new dust since you did that?

  • I have had the t809 for about a month. I am pretty sure (at least with my phone) that the dust comes in through a gap between the clear plastic lcd cover and the side of the phone (running along the front lcd edge). This gap is present only on the left side of the phone. I confirmed this by blowing air into between left side of the phone and lcd (into the little gap running along the lcd edge) and the dust particles moved. I hope this information helps,

  • I guess I will request the picture of the camera gap as well...I will be getting my phone in a day or two and will want to know where this gap is and how it can be fixed before I stick the phone in my pocket. thanks soo much. love the site.

  • I have had the t-809 for about 3 months now and have had the dust issue for over 2. My friend's is under a month old and contrary to most situations, his comes in from the upper left of the screen. Mine is the more common upper right side of the screen. Compressed air worked well for me, "removing" about 60% of the dust.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:50 AM

  • MIne's coming from the upper left part of the screen as well....i've only had it for about a week :/
