Samsung t809 dust prevention

Over the weekend, I put my t809 in my jeans pocket every minute I was out (and some time at the house). I received ZERO additional dust. The solution? Plugging the hole under the swivel-camera. It is a GLARING mistake that Samsung should have not released.

My "date" in the clean room is postponed for a few more days -- I will have the phone apart hopefully by Wednesday with photos, sorry for the delay. I'm getting free time with an engineer, so I have to deal with his schedule.

Once I have the phone apart, I will make measurements needed to find the best way to plug the camera hole. I used a very thin piece of canvas-paper, but the camera gets jammed in one position. I'll be trying some thin plastic film next.

  • i was thinking that maybe those oakley sunglasses microfiber cases might be a simple solution? just put ur 809 in one of those as a case and then put it in your pockets?

  • That is pretty much what I do -- I use a satin-lined pocket in my jacket that works great, and you can add satin lining to any pocket very cheaply at any seamstress or dry cleaners.

The sealing of the hole under the camera, though, would be a better long term process.

  • I use the fitted leather pouch and it is great. It has plastic protector for the screen and open space for the buttons; so I don't have to take the phone out of the pouch to use it. It is worth the $20.

Product ID: 17200000089 from local T-mobile store.

  • Good question about Google local! I left my phone with a tech to finish taking apart, cleaning and putting back together. WheN I get it back tomorrow I'll mess with Google local

  • Google is not a t809 issue, it is an issue with TMO's GPRS/EDGE services. I have been using the unlimited VPN option for about two years now and have never had access to google. I have had 4 different handsets a t610, V330, MPx220 and now an 809 and all have the same issue. You can't get to it from a laptop via tethered connection or the wap browser. I also had problems getting gmail in my Mpx220's pop email client. I always kind of figured it was some sort of weird DNS issue. all the other search engines seem to be fine. I just use dogpile.

  • I've used tmobile's unlimited internet service with my old phone (T610) / ipaq and laptop (via the phone) and never had a problem accessing google on any of them.

The problem with google local is the same as the one with Opera Mini and any other (unsigned) applet that tries to access the internet - port 80 is blocked to unsigned appletts.

This is why my T809 is going away. I develop j2me apps (hobby) and most of them use the internet - I certainly cannot get each rev signed! This was done in the phones firmware and there is no work around - there probably will never be one short of reflashing the phone (perhaps a D820 image?).

My guess is that this was done so that tmobile would get a cut of any subscrition apps.

Now I'm going back to my T610 (sucks!) untill I can find the phone I want (the 809 was soooo close)

  • Great blog! I recently purchased my t809 and set about plugging all possible dust entrances to the LCD. I've been carrying the phone in my pocket now for about a week, and I haven't had any dust problems. 1st - I covered the hole under the camera with a well cut piece of scotch tape (not easy, but worth the effort). The tape has held really well so far. 2nd - I stuffed the upper corners of the slide tracks (the ridged gutters on the back side of the slider plate) with sound-proofing foam. This foam compresses a huge amount, so it really sticks in the corner once you wedge it there. I hope this helps some people!

  • i got dust in my screen too, so i eventually called tmobile and requested a replacement. i mentioned its happened to a lot of people and the lady spent several minutes trying to find technical help for it. unable to find anything, she finally ordered a replacement for me, which should come in a few days

  • Just FYI and if you're worried about damaging the phone while in your pocket (against keys and such) you can try getting a moto Razor case which is roughly about the same size as the t809. I've picked one up and it fits nicely (tight but it works).

  • I've had dust under my screen every since i got the damn phone. Finally I was fed up with it and jammed a knife under the plastic and peeled it off. (NOT RECOMMENDED) Cleaned out the dust and then proceeded to plug the hole under the camera with poster puddy. Pretty easy. The puddy comforms to the hole and any excess you can just get rid of and the camera swivels just fine. Hope this helps. Poster Puddy is the way to go.
