Samsung t809 FAQ

Please visit our new website at Samsung t809 FAQ

How do I put my phone into Silent mode?
Press and hold the # key until it switches. You can switch back to normal mode this way too.

How can I copy files to my phone?
You must make sure your phone is in Mass Storage USB mode:
* Menu -> Settings -> Phone settings -> USB settings -> Select Mass Storage
* Plug your USB cable into your PC and it will work as a USB hard drive

How can I watch my videos in Full Screen?
Press 1. It will put the video in landscape mode, so turn your phone 90 degrees.

Can I watch videos from the memory card?
Yes. Instructions to be added.

How can I convert videos to 3GP format to view?
Go download and set it up with 3GPP+AAC General settings. Run the software and convert to QVGA (320x240) Normal quality 15fps stereo.

How can I install or download Java applications to my phone?
Browse to from your PC and set up an account there. You can download free games and applications via WAP on your phone from this site, and you can also upload your own application to download direct to your phone.

Why do my contacts show up twice?
You have contacts on the SIM card and on the internal phone memory. You will have to delete the contacts from one location to get rid of this doubling. It is common with phones with internal memory. I don't store numbers on my SIM card as the SIM card can not offer additional contact settings.

Why can't I add a Picture Caller ID to a contact?
The contact MUST reside on the phone's memory, not on the SIM card, in order for it to be tagged with a Picture Caller ID.

How can I end speakerphone calls by sliding the phone closed?
At this time, there is no solution -- this is a "feature."

How can I get the phone to vibrate and ring at the same time?
Power users have mentioned that this feature is not available, yet.

Can I use MP3s on my computer as ring tones?
Yes, go to this link to read the process. You may need to use the software below, too. *** I'll copy the process to this FAQ soon ***

How can I convert MP3s on my computer to 3PG ring tones on my phone?
I set up a batch program at this link.

How can I make MP3 ring tones stay the same volume, instead of quiet->loud?
At this time, there is no solution -- this might be a "feature" to protect the speaker. 01/17/06: Talked to Samsung, this is actually a "feature" to protect the ears of people who don't realize how loud some ringtones can be. It can not be turned off, yet.

How can I turn off the slide open/close sound?
Menu -> Settings -> Sound Settings -> Slide Tone -> OFF

How can I turn off the End of Call sound?
You can't at this time.

What is the hole on top of the phone?
No one has confirmed it -- theories are that it may be related to a second mic or speaker for the speakerphone operation.

How can I make my own wallpapers?
Use a graphic editing program to set your image to 240x320 pixels. Save as a JPG or GIF file and transfer to your phone. Then select it:
*Menu -> Fun & Apps -> File Manager -> Images -> Memory Card -> Images folder
*Highlight the image file name, select Options and Set as Wallpaper

Can I use the built in camera to take pictures to use as a t809 wallpaper?
Yes. You have to edit the resolution that the camera is saving the image as.
*Press the Camera button -> Options -> 7. Settings -> Function
*Change the size to Mobile which is 240x320 resolution.
*Don't forget to change back to your normal resolution for other photos.

When the camera is turned to face me, the image is flipped.
Hit the volume up/down button to invert the image as needed.

Can I save camera photos directly to the T-Flash card?
Not at this time. You can move them from the phone to the T-Flash card manually.

What is the biggest T-Flash card I can use?
512MB have been tested, but there are 1GB T-Flash / SD Transflash cards available. I have not tested them yet. If you have tested a 1GB T-Flash card, please let me know the brand and the outcome.

How can I turn off the top clock?
There are currently no ways to turn this clock off.

I get an icon that looks like a white envelope with a red to white gradient bar that flips upside down. What is this?
Your SIM card is full of SMS messages -- delete some (have less than 30 on the SIM card) and that icon goes away.

How can I receive SMS messages straight to phone memory rather than the SIM card?
No answer yet.

How do I handle screen dust?
Many people with this problem tend to keep their t809 phone in their pockets. Users with pouches and cases for the phone seem to not have this problem. Some believe it is lint that entered the headphone jack connector. I keep my phone in a pocket lined with satin and have had no dust issues, yet. Some T-Mobile corporate stores will offer to exchange your phone if you have this problem and bring the box and all the contents but your mileage may vary. 01/17/06: I received dust when I carried my phone in my jeans. I plugged the hole under the camera with a thin piece of rubber and replaced that with scotch tape under the hole -- the dust problem has not increased. Some people have found a small hole on the back of the phone on the tiny rectangle "bumps" you can see to the left and right when the slider is up. Covering these if they are leaking light in total darkness should help.

Can I run Opera Mini on the t809?
At this time, Samsung and T-Mobile both blame Opera for a Java Security issue. I am awaiting a reply from Opera regarding the unsigned app. As of 01/17/06 Opera refuses to answer or acknowledge my question. Please pester them regarding getting their application signed for use on T-Mobile Samsung phones.

Can I disabled the low battery restrictions?
When your battery gets extremely low, the phone will refuse to use many features such as MP3 playback, the Camera and even the keypad backlight. This protects your battery so you can still make an emergency phone call but requires that you charge your phone in order to get the normal use back.

I am trying to connect to EDGE or GPRS or T-Zones from my laptop using my t809 as a Bluetooth Modem, but when I dial out I receive the following error:

Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.

You need to add an additional setting:
On Windows 2000 (XP will be similar), do the following:
*Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options, Modem tab (highlight bluetooth modem),
*Properties, Advanced tab. In Extra initialization commands enter:

*Click OK twice to save it, and dial out! You might have to reboot, I didn't.

What "secret" phone codes are there for the phone?
*#8888# - H/W Version
*#9999# - Firmware Version
*#06# - IMEI serial number
*#VSWAP# - Swap WAP profile from Internet2 to Internet3

How do I unlock the t809? / Where do I get an unlock code?
If you have been a customer in good standing with T-Mobile for 90 days, and have a contract, you can usually get an unlock code to use the phone in another country. Call 611 and they'll give you an unlock code.

Once you have this unlock code, you can unlock your t809 using the following command:

*7465625*638*Unlocked Code#

Please do not ask me or anyone I am affiliated with for an unlock code -- I don't have one.
How can I get the t809 to work on the Cingular network?
Type *#87927# which enters the phone into hidden Browser Profile menu.
Go to 2 Profile settings and select it.
Go to Profile 2 and edit it with the Cingular settings:
Profile Name: Express
Home URL: http://device.home
Bearer: GPRS Only
Proxies: Enabled

Go to GPRS settings (ignore GSM settings as Cingular doesn't need them)
IP -
Port: 8080
APN: wap.cingular
(All upper case)
Password: CINGULAR1
(All upper case)
Go back to the current profile and select the one you changed, save and exit.

For MMS/Picture messaging:
Type *#87667# which enters the Debug Mode.
Go to 4 Server settings, then go to 2 Profile settings and select it.
Drop down to Profile 2 and edit with the Cingular settings:
Settings Name: Multimedia

APN: wap.cingular
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (upper case)
Password:CINGULAR1 ( upper case)
Go back to the current profile and select the one you changed, save and exit.

If you get a network unavailable message, enter *#4777*8665# and go to 6 GPRS setting and change it to GPRS Mode.

  • Is there any way of inverting the image when the camera lens is facing you?

    Thanks for your help.

By Anonymous Alfonso, at 5:23 PM

  • Is there any way of inverting the image when the camera lens is facing you?

Yup! Its in the FAQ :) Just use the volume up and down buttons to invert the image.

By Anonymous Alfonso, at 6:04 PM

  • is there any difference when the phone is unlocked ? or is it only for Worldwide usage ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:03 AM

  • is there any difference when the phone is unlocked ? or is it only for Worldwide usage ?

The only difference is the phone can accept SIM cards from other GSM providers.

By Anonymous Devin, at 10:25 AM

  • If you use a differnt sim then t-mobile and want to do a network selection use code *#8999*8378#

  • how do you get full screen wallpapers like the default ones on the phone? Is there a way to use my own photos as full screen wallpapers? Help!!!!!!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:24 PM

  • sorry, i meant to mention in the the previous comment that i was wondering if you can transfer pictures from your computer to the phone and have them be the same resolution so that the wallpapers will be full screen on my menu. Help!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:35 PM

  • The screen size is 240x320, so just use a basic image editor to resize the image you want to use and then transfer them to the phone via data cable or the memory card. You have to copy the wallpaper to the phone before it will let you use it though.

By Anonymous Devin, at 4:16 PM

  • How can you change the options on the left and right buttons... that show Phonebook on the right and whatever on the left...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:55 PM

  • biggest T-Flash card...

Sandisk makes the Trans-flash, aka "microSD" format. Last week at CES in Las Vegas, they announced the 1GB with a list of $120. No one has it yet (Ebay or elsewhere). In 6 months the 2GB microSD should be available. (Keep checking Ebay.)

  • HOW DO WE CHANGE THE HOTKEYS??? Says Menua on the Left and Phonebook on the right.....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:54 PM

  • according to tmobile website, this phone has a 180 minute talk time. This is seriously low, unheard of. Is this pretty much accurate because I travel alot. I could use this up during an overlay

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:56 PM

  • For using your t809 as a modem via USB I got the error: Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated. I followed similar directions as above, i.e.,
On Windows 2000 (XP will be similar), do the following:
*Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options, Modem tab (highlight bluetooth modem),
*Properties, Advanced tab. In Extra initialization commands enter:

The service rep said that perhaps the string:

    might work as well.

Notice that compared to the FAQ given in this web page, the internet2 is replaced with internet3.

Also, the service rep suggested turning off and on the phone.

Happy surfing (actually, right now, their network doesn't seem to work very well)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:41 PM

  • do you know if there is a way to put this phone in "airplane mode"?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:45 AM

  • The unlock code given on this page is incorrect.

    Rather than: *7465625*638*Unlock code#
You need to enter: #7465625*638*Unlock code#

  • Hi, I was wondering if there was anyway to use an Mp3 transfered from my PC to my phone as a Text message tone/alert?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:15 AM

  • EDGE/GPRS Settings for T-809 & T-Mobile, and specifically for Mac OS X Users.

On your phone, go to Settings, then Phone Settings, then USB Settings. Make sure that you have chosen Modem as the use for the USB Setting. And now the Mac.

First, visit Ross Barkman's page at and download his GENERIC 3G SCRIPTS, about 2/3 of the way down the page. Unzip/open this file and put the two scripts (Generic 3G CID1 and Generic 3G CID2) in /Library/Modem Scripts/.

Second, make sure that you have removed any settings in the Network panel, in System Preferneces (Network Control Panel) that you have created for this phone. If you can't remove the settings or the "Samsung....something" port listing, open the file /Library/Prefernces/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist in a text editor (BBEdit or TextEdit). Search for "Samsung" when you find it, scroll up a few lines and look for something like <key>0209C36B-8S75-01DA-D6E6-000876239C74528</key>, then starting with that line, delete that line and everything else down the page up to the next "<key>"

Restart your Mac, make sure the phone is disconnected. Now when you open System Preferences (after you reboot), you should not see anything regarding the Samsung. Good. Now CLOSE System Preferences

Now, using the cable that came with the phone, connect the phone and the Mac using the supplied USB cable. We'll get to Blluetooth in a moment. Now, wait at least 10 seconds. Then, open System Preferences, and the Network panel. You may get a message that a port has been added. Fine.

You should see the information for "Network Status" when you first open the Network panel. Double click the Samsung listing.

For Service Provider, type something like "T obile EDGE Service". For account name use "guest" without the quotes. For Password, use "guest, without the quotes. For Phone Number, type "" Leave the alternate number blank. Click the PPP options button, UNCHECK everything, yes, all of it. And at the very bottom of that panel, the only thing you should check is "Use Verbose Logging." Now press "OK"

Next, click the "Modem" tab in the Network panel. For modem, choose "Generic 3G CID 1" and then uncheck the two options under that, "Enable Error Correction...." and "Wait for dial tone..." Make sure that you check off "Show modem status in Menu bar" at the bottom of that panel.

    Click "Apply Now"

    Close the Network panel.

At the top of your screen, you should see the little phone icon for the Internet Connect application. Click that and you should see a listing for "Samsung Mobile USB Modem" or something of that nature. Select that. Now, click the phone icon again and at the bottom of the list, choose "Open Internet Connect", and you should see all of your settings already listed. Now, go to the "Window" menu and select "Conection Log". Then, and only then, hit "Connect". The connection will start and you can watch the progress in the connection log. Once connection, you can quit the Internet Connect application (Apple+Q).

Understand that whatever the problem, be it T Mobile, Samsung or the EDGE / Class 10 technology, you may have to try several times before getting a connection. It's just not that stable. And, I live in Atlanta, GA. So, I know it's not my coverage. I mean IN the city. Once connected however, I've been on for hours with speeds of 168-230k or higher. Your mileage may vary.

As for Bluetooth. Well, I did the same thing. Same settings, but under the Bluetooth port in the Network panel. But, I only got a good connection once or twice. Bottom line for me is that it's just not reliable whereas the USB cable is. Besides, why use two radio signals (tower to phone to bluetooth) when you can use just one (tower to phone, then to Mac via USB). Cheers!

When I access the permisson menu, it says that all of my settings are set to allow for access both in and out but I'm still not getting past the startup screen. Any suggestions?

  • I have had my T809 for about a week, and I must say I'm pretty satisfied. Your code for the GPRS settings has proven to be quite useful. I have noticed that changing the EGPRS (EDGE) settings to Class 10 (out of the box default is class 4) greatly increases transmission speed, but drains battery life quickly. Just a tip for those interested in speeding up their wireless web browsing.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:26 PM

  • As far as windows users, the software that comes with the phone covers windows users. So, I didn't go into that and I don't use windows. As I mentioned in the post, my info was specifically for Mac OS X, teh T-809 and T-Mobile.

As for a couple of the other questions, you have to activate the full Internet package with TMobile in order to get EDGE/GPRS service. So, make sure that you have done that.

As for the "Library" folder, that's the Library folder on your MAC, as I said, these instructions are for the Mac. In my post, I started at the root of the hard drive, thus...

"First, visit Ross Barkman's page at and download his GENERIC 3G SCRIPTS, about 2/3 of the way down the page. Unzip/open this file and put the two scripts (Generic 3G CID1 and Generic 3G CID2) in /Library/Modem Scripts/ on your MACINTOSH OS X System.

  • On Video Encoding
I have gotten *AMAZING* video quality out of the T809. In ffmpegX (the Mac GUI to ffmpeg), I used the following settings:

    Video Codec: XviD [.MP4] ffmpeg
    Video Quality: 15fps, 240x320, @256kbit/s
    !!!! 2-PASS ENCODING !!!!

Audio can probably be improved, I used AAC @ 40kbit ABR, sampled in Stereo at 22050Hz and it was pretty good. Works out to less than 150MB/hour, with no real visible artifacts. Fast Forward and Rewind worked well, and the audio track stayed in sync.

I have no numbers comparing battery life between the codecs, but it shouldn't vary much -- there appears to be a dedicated chip that handles the video decoding.

Also, it's worth noting that the T809 can play PSP-format video files, but only if they're in the 4:3 aspect ratio (no widescreen files).

  • Anyone else having issues with Yahoo Messenger?? I can send messages perfectly fine, but when receiving them, they are all garbles and preceeded with a bunch of code and numbers. Sometimes this cuts off the message itself, and sometimes I'm not receiving the other sender's messages at all. All of mine seem to get through however.

    Stranger and stranger.

  • Derrick,
I'm considering getting an 809, and wondering if you've had any luck with sync'ing contacts or ical. I've read a bunch about how iSync requires SyncML, which Samsung phones have not had, but as far as I can tell, the 809 _does_ come with syncML.
    Any info?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:55 PM

  • I followed what you said about making the t809 work with cingular...I did everything you said and when I search for available networks cingular even shows up...but the problem is the phone says "insert sim" and "can not registar" when I try and select cingular as my network...any advice?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:34 PM

  • I tried early on to get the phone to work with iSync. But had no luck and haven't tried since then. I looked around as I posted this and the only thing I found is OnSync - - I downloaded it, but have yet to try it. Also, when I re-pared my t809 with my Powerbook (just upgraded to Tiger, 10.4.4), and then launched iSync, I was able to get iSync (2.1.1) to see the phone, it even used an icon that looks like the t809. But then iSync reports that the device is not supported.

  • Is there any way in which I can listen MP3 songs thru my bluetooth headset. Right now only making and attending calls is possible thru the headset.

    Thanks for your help

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:23 AM

  • I've had very good success with OnSync ( It was well worth buying (the demo only allows manual sync) and works flawlessly over bluetooth. I guess Apple will eventually support Samsung, there seems no reason not to, especially with the vast array of seemingly great phones they release in Europe.
It's annoying not to be able to sync the calendar, I wonder if one can upload a vcal file manually to the phone...
PS anyone have trouble with tzones? it seems awfully slow to load, despite having set my gprs and egprs settings to class 10

  • ok ringtone problem, ive saved a contact to my phone set up a 3g song as a caller ID but when that person calls, the incomeing ringtone plays???if i set the song as incomeing it will play just not when the caller its set up under does???

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:02 AM

  • I haven't seen this listed anywhere yet, but you can display an easy-to-read display with the phone closed. Hold down the volume key on the side of the phone (with it closed) for a few seconds. A huge white bkg/black text screen pops up with clock, date, signal, stregth, etc. Not really conveinent because you can see most of this if you just bring the phone out of "sleep", but kind of nice at night.

Question: Does anyone know if the T809 can add a recent or missed call to an EXISTING contact in the phonebook?

By Anonymous Sean O, at 4:26 PM

  • PC Studio 3 can only see less than 64MB of internal memeory. If you have more than 64MB free space, PC studio will only report what's above 64MB. It is software issue from PC. You can take dummy pictures to confirm. Once you bring memory below 64MB, it will see the rest of the memory.

  • I was wondering if anyone else had recieved 500: Internal Server Error when attempting to download files via the integrated browser?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:06 AM

  • When I tried to install the driver on my computer it says "PC samsung studio hasn't been window tested for XP, and could destabilize your system either immediatly or soon. Windows strongly suggests you halt the installation of this program."

Whats your take on this. By the way, there were 4 or 5 of you faq answers that helped me immensely. Thank You & Help!

  • Thanks so much for the awesome FAQ! As much as I love the screen and the visual appeal of this phone, I was going to return it until reading this FAQ breathed new life into it. I got the bluetooth modem Internet access working with the instructions here ALMOST until it got stuck on "registering your computer on the network". A quick call to 611 (tell the automated voice lady "bluetooth modem" or "sidekick" to get to the right people). They had to enable the hotspot+internet access bundle (not T-web) for $30. Not too bad considering I was already paying $20 for the hotspot.

Anyway, my main gripes with the phone are 1) you can't reprogram the menu items on main screen or create shortcuts to things like alarm clock or images that are too deep down, 2) a contact entry can't have multiple same-type number (e.g. two mobile numbers), 3) can't add a call log number to existing phonebook entry, 4) you can't choose the primary number for a contact (the one to call on pressing call without going through the types), and 5) you can't reduce the font size of contacts browsing the phonebook so you could squeeze in more numbers. I might still try the PEBL.

  • To every one asking about unlocking...
there is not a one code fits all. every phone has a different code, call t-mobile and if you qualify they will send you an unlock code it usually takes about 3 days but can take longer.

I was having the same problem with a few of my videos. It turned out that the file names were too long! Just rename to a shorter name, hope that is your problem.

  • With the samsung t809 when connecting to the computer after the driver and the software has been install you will need to set your phone from mass storage to modem. This is found in phone settings>usb settings.

  • haha I never figured out how to go into silent mode til now, I figured out everything else but not that?! haha, it's not like my motorola v300 I had a while ago xD

  • Guys listen up. There is a one size fits all unlock code for your samsung t809! Just insert your sim, then turn on the phone. When it displays "wrong sim" type in *2767*2878# and the phone will reset itself and then use your sim. I tried and tested this with my Cingular sim card. Just don't turn off the phone or your personal settings will get reset to default and you'll have to re-enter the code. Enjoy.

  • You can use a 1GB Microsd card on the t809. Just bought a Sandisk and it works perfectly. Hope that clears out the misconception of the 512MB limit.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:52 PM

  • thank you so much- im buying the phone and ive been doing a lot of research on which is better the slvr l7 or this samsung- you cleared up a lot of misconceptions for me- o just have one question- is there a time limit on the mp3 songs that are going to be set as a ringtone- can they be a full song or a small clip?

  • For those interesting in iSync support the phone does NOT work, but if your interested in transfering contacts it will work w/ address book. Just select the conctact you want to send to the phone then go to "card" then "send this card" and it will open a new window which will give you a choice of devices to send it to, select yours and accept the transfer on your phone and your good to go!!! Hope this helps for neone (i find it easier to use than onsync but thats just me)

  • I used the brilliant .bat file that you created to convert my songs to .3gp
Now I have a problem, I need to convert them back :/ Do you think you could create another .bat file that would do the opposite and convert .3gp files to .mp3? or could you show me how to create that .bat file?
That would be a great help!
