MP3 Ringtones on Samsung t809 cell phone

Please visit our new website at Samsung t809 FAQ

*** I added a simple batch file "program" at this link to help with this process ***

Many users are mad that copying MP3's to their phone won't let them use it as a ringtone. It seems the t809 requires DRM (Digital Rights Management) on the MP3 in order to play it as a ringtone.

Some users found a great work around -- rename the MP3 on your computer before copying it over to your phone. The normal MP3 extension of the filename, for example: FUNSONG.MP3, needs to become 3GP. You can do this in Windows Explorer or in DOS -- just rename the MP3 portion to 3GP.

I've tested the following procedure and it works flawless:

1. Find your MP3 folder on your computer
2. Click Tools -> Folder Options -> View
3. Make sure the "Hide file extensions for known file types" is UNCHECKED.
4. Click Apply, then click OK
5. Find the MP3 file you want to use as a ringtone. Right click it.
6. Click Rename -- erase the MP3 portion and replace it with 3GP. If the filename is FUNSONG.MP3 it must now be called FUNSONG.3GP
7. Copy the file to your phone (via USB or Bluetooth)
8. Select it as a ring tone, and you're set.

Be careful with the size of your ringtones, of course. I use Audacity (a open source freeware sound editing program) to make my ringtones smaller, so as not to take up too much space on my t809.

Why would Samsung limit the phone this way when it is so easy to work around it?

  • Great Blog,Thanks for the tips!!!

  • Thank you so much. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you, thank you, thank you. :)

  • First off this is an awesome blog, you're very helpful and friendly!

Now to the problem: I purchased my Samsung t809 today from Tmo and I absolutely LOVE IT! But of course I want /free/ mp3 ringtones without paying and I came back to your blog and wa-la you had a fix to my problem...

I soon found out it didn't work :( I tried doing it both manually, and with the little program you made and neither worked. I get an error message saying "Unknown file type". Please help! Pleeeease!

  • I had the same issue... Is a different program needed for the transfer to the phone?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:33 AM

  • someone told me that the USB setting must be mass storage.. but once i select mass storage, my PC would not recognize my phone. do you know what to do?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:28 PM

  • Figured it out.

    1. Rename the .mp3 song on your PC to .3gp
    2. On your phone, go to Menu -> Settings -> Phone Settings -> USB Settings and select 'Mass Storage'
    3. You should now have a removable storage drive E: in My Computer in Windows (it may be called F: or something else, but it will say Removable Storage)
    4. Copy your .3gp file from your PC to the Music folder on your removable drive (exactly the same way you would copy files to a USB flash drive)
    5. Unplug phone from computer. If you don't, you will get an error message 'USB in use' in the next step.
    6. On your phone, go to Menu -> Fun and Apps -> File Manager -> Music -> Memory Card -> Music
    7. Hit Options -> Copy To -> Phone and select all the songs you want to copy.
    8. Once you copy to the phone you can view the songs by going Menu -> Fun and Apps -> File Manager -> Music -> My Music
    9. From there you can set as a General ringtone, a specific caller ringtone, alarm tone, ect.

    Hope this helps!

  • by the way after you transfer your .3gp files you can go to Menu -> Settings -> Phone Settings -> USB Settings and select Modem for the samsung software to recognize the phone again.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:30 PM

  • You need to transfer the 3gp file to your memory card NOT the phone.
    A`la mass storage as stated.
    Just wanted to clarify.

  • thanks so much..i really appreciate your worked..instantly it just took me a couple of minutes to change the file names..thanks once again!

By Anonymous sexcbooty, at 12:01 AM

  • It didnt work! Everytime i click on the removable drive F:, it says "Please enter disk into drive F:" What is that about??

By Blogger Titan, at 10:53 PM

  • i have deleted the ringtones that originally came with the phone. they were in drm format. is there a way that i could get that back on the phone? someone said that you would need those ringtones so you could play mp3 ringtones.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:35 PM

  • i keep trying to get it to work also and it never lets me select the song to be used as a ringtone. what am i doing wrong??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:25 AM

  • I also get the "Please enter disk into drive F:" Error message when trying to access the T809 as a disk drive. The phone is in Mass Storage mode and Windows definitely recognizes the device when it's plugged in. I looked at the Samsung drivers and they appear only to apply to the modem. It's using a Windows driver for the Mass storage.

Anyone had this problem and been able to resolve it?

Also, I moved files over to the SD the adaptor, but when I try to access the card in the phone in file manager I get a "Not Allowed" error. Anyone seen this?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:11 AM

  • Ok. I've converted the mp3 files to aac format and changed the extension to .3gp. I've moved the file over to the phone using PC Studio under the Music Folder. I can see and play the file on the player, but the phone will not allow me to select the file as a ring tone. I get the error message "Not Supported Content"

I just got this phone. Any change they've updated the firmware to break the .3gp hack?

    Here's my firmware (via *#9999#)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:13 PM

  • hi guys -
ive been trying to do this all day and still have not succeeded. i`m pretty frustrated..and was just hoping for any help at all.
basically i`ve gotten the songs onto my phone under memory card and music, and the set as option is there. the options are set as ringtone, caller ringtone, or alarm ringtone. however, when i pick set as ringtone, it says 'not supported content'
does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
    i would really appreciate it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:20 PM

  • WOWOWOWOWOWOW THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i seriouly was stressing over the fact that i couldnt use my mp3 as ringtone but you solved my problem!!! thanks

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:02 PM

  • Hey i have found a freeware program that works awesome
you can drag and drop a mp3 or a video into the box and it converts it to a real 3gp file about 1/4 or 1/8 the original size, it made it too where i have 32 songs and 4 full length music videos, all on the 32mb micro sd card. i also did a "froogle" search on the micro sd and found a 1 gig card for around $55 bucks and if you do the math that works out to about 400-600 songs on your phone! I love my Phone

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:09 PM

  • hi.. i got some of my songs to work but others won't. is it because of size? It's weird because I have 'set as' option for only some.. am I doing something wrong with some of them?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:46 PM

  • i had the same problem with the usb method... it's a lot easier to use a card reader and the sd adapter that came with the phone. i did it that way and used the "drag and drop" method. i had no problems doing it this way. browse your memory card in both "sounds" and "music" folder. it will be in there and you'll be able to set it as your ringtone. this method is a lot easier than the program that the phone comes with.

  • excellent blog, thanks for the tips

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:41 PM

  • im actually stuck on step one, which is converting mp3 to 3gp. can anyone give me a step-by-step on how to do that with whatever method you suggest? thanks

By Blogger blazinamh, at 9:55 AM

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you. :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:24 PM

  • Actually, Samsung does not limit this feature. If you buy the unbranded version of this phone (the Samsung D820), it is exactly the same but you can use MP3's as ringtomes, and you can use Java programs that access the web.

The reason that Tmobiles t809 and Cingulars d807 have this feature limited is so that you will buy ringtones and software from their WAP stores, instead of make your own.

By Anonymous Rick, at 4:54 PM

  • i wish this might help you folks.. i transfered the *.3gp with a bluetooth and just paste it.. not in any folder.. (example music\ or sound\) in short "DONT PUT THE *.3GP FILE IN ANY FOLDER"

dont worry the file will be automatically put in music\ folder.

there you go you can you it now as a ringtone.
